I Got Busier Than He Did

It was hot along the Gulf, with souvenir shops where we’d purchased Christmas gifts, telling our families sorry we wouldn’t make it. It was our first Christmas, and he’d recorded our tree with all its decorations. He was supposed to have gotten off at midnight and my shift ended at four-thirty, and then I brought him supper.

Now it was way past that and I was finished being pregnant. We worked the same place, the lab, only I worked blood bank. We all wore whites, and I got busier than he did. We got married so we could be together.

I dried myself with a towel and my dog wagged his tail for a treat. I gave him one. I was tired of waiting.  It was two a.m. and my husband wasn’t in yet.

I drove around, dipping into chocolate. I went to check his spots, then finally got to a place of his before me. The lights were on so I knocked and then the lights were off.  Someone laughed and whispered. Huh. I held my gut and made myself stay there.
