Michael Hemery returns to his roots to illuminate an honest working-class existence in his new book No Permanent Scars (292 pp., Silenced Press, $16), a collection of nonfiction stories that offers both the sober realities of class discrimination and the humor and love of family. Intertwined with serious issues such as suicide, alcoholism, abuse, religion, and immigration, Hemery also endures a painfully slow and often naive coming of age (for instance, in college, he once mistook an obvious prostitute for an office supply store employee). Hemery’s essay “Not Only ,” which opens his new collection, originally appeared in TTR (vol. 5/2009).
Melinda Moustakis’s Bear Down, Bear North: Alaska Stories, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction is now available for pre-order here. “Point MacKenzie,” featured in the collection, was originally published in TTR (vol. 6/2010).
Irene O’Garden “Glad to be Human” (vol. 6/2010) won a Pushcart Prize and will be published in the 2012 anthology. O’Garden’s writing has found its way to the Off-Broadway stage (Women On Fire, Samuel French), into hardcover (Fat Girl,Harper) children’s books (Holiday House publishes her latest in 2013) and many literary journals and anthologies. Her new play, Little Heart, will star Amanda Plummer. O’Garden’s work is presently or forthcoming in Atlanta Review, Bayou, California Poetry Quarterly, Alembic, and Permafrost. She recently composed The Toast Cantata, for four voices. Irene has received writing awards, fellowships and residencies.
